Lambda Players Gets 4 Star Review
From: lambdaplayers.com
DEL SHORES’ SORDID LIVES, MAY 8TH – MAY 30TH, 2009, FRI / SAT 8PM, www.lambdaplayers.com, 916-444-8229, The Los Angeles Times wrote: ” Sordid Lives has more laughs than a hunting dog has ticks. Del Shores is a master of Texas comedy.” This is the absolute truth, and so the Lambda Players are bringing back one of their biggest hits ever…SORDID LIVES! This hilarious ” Birdcage meets the Bible Belt” opens on Friday May 8th and will play Fri/Sat at 8pm through May 30th. Written by Del Shores, this production is directed by Matthew Burlingame. Sordid Lives, the original stage play, premiered in Los Angeles in 1996, and ultimately won 14 Drama League Awards. Taglined as “a black comedy about white trash”, Sordid Lives starts when Peggy, a good Christian woman, hits her head on the sink and bleeds to death after tripping over her lover’s wooden legs in a motel room, chaos erupts in Winters, Texas. Del Shores wacky play was made into a film in 2000 and in 2008 Sordid Lives, The Series on TV. This production is recommended for adults over 18.
DEAR HARVEY: This original readers theatre production will premiere in Sacramento on May 7 and run through May 31 at the Lambda Players Studio Theatre. This timely piece, related through various sources, provides a touching, life-affirming and at times humorous portrait of the activist who affected so many and changed the course of politics. Milk fought not only for gays and lesbians, but for minorities, the elderly, unions, public transit, health care, and even dope smokers and prostitutes. He believed in individual freedoms, the power of community and the importance of gays to come out of the closet, to be seen and heard. Lambda Players Studio Theatre, 1028 R Street, Sacramento CA 95811, www.lambdaplayers.com, 916-444-8229,
All tickets $13. Reservations can be made online at www.lambdaplayers.com, and information by calling 916-444-8229.
Stonewall Plans Support For Betty Yee
Please join us in supporting one of the most important elected leaders in our community, Betty Yee. The gay community and our friends are hosting an event for Betty at the home of Ted Ross and Eric Jensen (28th and U Streets) on June 23rd at 5:30 pm. We are asking people to join us as hosts at $100 for individuals and $200 for couples. Betty, the current Chair of the Board of Equalization representing the 1st District, has served us well in her role as an elected official.
Betty has always sought opportunities to make a difference for under-represented communities, including the LGBT community. Throughout her public service career, beginning as a Santa Cruz County public health commissioner, Betty advocated to protect local, state, and federal funding for HIV/AIDS prevention, education, treatment, and research, including full funding of the AIDS Drug Assistance Program. While serving as Chief Deputy to former BOE Chairwoman Carole Migden, she was instrumental in the development of BOE rules that provide a surviving registered domestic partner to avoid a property tax reassessment when the other partner dies. In her current service, Betty sponsored SB 565 (Migden), which enacted change-in-ownership exclusions for property tax transfers among registered domestic partners identical to those for heterosexual married couples. Some of this tax policy may seem obscure, but please know it has made a huge financial difference for many LGBT couples.
As an Asian American woman, Betty understands and is fully committed to ending discrimination against all communities and knows how important it is to guarantee that each and every one of us enjoy the same civil protections and rights. She is a strong supporter of marriage equality and was an early supporter, contributor and campaigner on behalf of the No on 8 campaign. Please let us know ASAP by responding to our email if you will host this important event. Please help us raise enough money to ensure that Betty can continue to fight for our rights.
