Auction Items Needed for Four Freedoms Dinner

Donate an Auction Item to Four Freedoms Dinner, Wednesday, May 20 Show your support for Sacramento Stonewall by donating or finding an item for our silent auction. Auction favorites include: gift certificates or items from merchants or restaurants, professional services, antiques or collectables, theater and performance tickets, stays at vacation homes, even a home-cooked meal — the range of items is as endless as your imagination. It’s an easy ask! Just ask places that you frequent (gyms, restaurants, spas, local merchants) to support the auction. You can obtain “ask letters” from David Troxel at bestfriendsdavid@aol.com. The event raises funds for many vital campaigns, including our fight to restore marriage equality in California. Last year, Stonewall gave over $45,000 to openly gay and gay-supportive Democratic candidates and numerous charitable causes that support the LGBT community. We expect over 350 political, business, community leaders and club members to come together this year to give tribute to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s famous Four Freedoms Speech (Freedom from Want, Freedom of Speech and Expression, Freedom of Worship and Freedom from Fear) and to recognize other award winners. If you have an auction item, or would like to buy tickets for the event, please complete and mail or fax the attached form or contact David Troxel at (916) 600-8075 or Todd Pederson at 916-267-7406 to arrange delivery or pick up. More information and tickets are available at www.sacstonewall.org.
Men attacked in Midtown hate crime
Two men were assaulted by three Hispanic men on Friday, March 6, in Midtown Sacramento in what law enforcement officials are treating as a hate crime attack. The attackers remain at large.
The two victims had just left the Mercantile Saloon at approximately 11 p.m. and were attacked near the intersection of 20th Street and Capitol Avenue. Three Hispanic males, all described as approximately 25 to 30 years old and 170 to 200 pounds, attacked the victims from behind, then beat and kicked them. The victims were not robbed.
Police are treating the incident as a hate crime because the perpetrators used gay slurs during the attack.
Capt. Dana Matthes of the Sacramento Police Department said the two victims responded to the attack in the best possible way. “One guy called the police, then told the assailants he had called,” Matthes said. “It probably stopped the attack. That’s exactly the right thing to do. If you can take a picture with your cell phone, even better.”
Anyone having information about this crime is urged to contact CRIME ALERT at (916) 443-HELP or (800) AA-CRIME. Callers may remain anonymous.
We encourage everyone to remain alert to and follow these safety tips from the Sacramento Police Department:
Walking
- Plan your route ahead of time. Never walk alone at night; walk with a friend or your dog.
- Use well lit streets, not dark alleys or bushy areas. – Carry signaling devices like shriek alarms or a whistle.
- Carry pepper spray (requires a short training course first).
- BE ALERT ! Look behind you occasionally.
- NEVER ask for or accept a ride from a stranger.
- Don’t carry large sums of money or wear valuable jewelry.
- Don’t resist an armed robber-hand over whatever is demanded quickly and quietly.
- Your life and safety are worth more than any personal property.
Driving
- Always look inside before entering your car.
- Lock all doors immediately after you are in the car.
- Never pick up hitchhikers.
- If a stranger approaches while you are in the car, keep the windows up, doors locked and engine running.
- Honk your horn if you need to attract attention.
- Park in well lit areas at night.
- Always lock your car when leaving it.
- Consider installing an auto burglar alarm system.
- Don’t leave anything valuable in your car if at all possible.
