Sappho In Love Gets Good Reviews

Lesbi-larious: Sappho in Love
Source: Lambda Players Myspace Blast

[From Sacramento News & Review]The Lambda Players’ production of Sappho in Love disproves the old canard about lesbians lacking a sense of humor. Set in the time of the great lyric poet Sappho (Kira Volar), Carolyn Gage’s comedy takes the sort of liberties with history familiar to any fan of Xena: Warrior Princess. The poet is a playa, and her school is her playground. But she’s about to lose the great love of her life if she doesn’t settle down and get married. Enter the goddesses. Prepare to laugh. These are some funny, funny lesbians. [Read Full Review HERE]

Sappho In Love, Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. Continues through Aug. 9, $13-$16.50, The Studio Theatre, 1028 R St., 916-444-8229

Proposition 8 Will Stay On Ballot

High Court Denies Gay Marriage Ban Challenge
Proposition 8 Will Stay On Ballot Barring Further Legal Action

Source: KCRA

The California Supreme Court has refused to hear a case seeking to keep a gay marriage ban initiative off the November ballot. The justices’ decision not to take up the case means Proposition 8 will stay on the ballot barring further legal action. It also clears the way for the secretary of state to print voter information pamphlets on the issue. The initiative seeks to amend California’s constitution to ban same-sex nuptials in the state. It would overrule a May decision by the state Supreme Court legalizing gay marriage. Equality California filed a petition last month arguing that the signature petitions used to put the proposal on the ballot were misleading. The group also said Proposition 8 is a constitutional revision rather than an amendment, which would make it improper to put before voters.

7/12: Artist Robin Hushbeck at Lavender Library

Tonight from 6-9 pm, the Lavender Library will be open late for a 2nd Saturday with Robin Hushbeck. We hope that you’ll be able to stop by, meet the artist and enjoy some refreshments with us.

Robin “Hush” Hushbeck is a Sacramento native who recently returned from a brief sabatical, toughing it out on the rough and rowdy streets of San Francisco. Ms. Hushbeck did not go to art school, instead, she majored in Excessive Amounts of Reading and is currently pursuing graduate work in Helping Others Read Excessively. Despite the firm grounding in literature and proper grammar, Ms. Hushbeck fancies herself a “creative type,” pursuing the visual arts as well as an erstwhile affair with musical theatre. She has spent her formative [and post-formative] years performing with several stellar Sacramento theatre companies and enjoys any chance to express herself creatively. She considers her art to be a love song to word searches, graphic novels, paint pens, blood-pumping organs and swirling lines.

Sacramentans Unite to Defeat Prop 8

Sacramentans Unite to Defeat Prop 8 – Community is Urged to Attend a Kick-off Meeting on July 30
Source: Community Member Email

A group of local leaders and organizations is urging residents to attend a community-wide informational meeting focused on defeating Proposition 8 – the November ballot initiative that would deny gay and lesbian couples the freedom to marry. Local leaders are working in concert with the Equality for All campaign, a large and diverse coalition of civil rights, faith, choice, communities of color, and labor organizations that is working to defeat Prop 8. A Sacramento community-wide informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 30 at 6:00pm at Curtis Hall in the Sierra 2 Center. Residents will receive a briefing on the local efforts to defeat Prop 8 and will learn how they can take an active role in the campaign.

Earlier this year, the State Supreme Court ruled that California’s constitution guarantees gay and lesbian couples the freedom to marry. Prop 8 seeks to revise the constitution and would require that gay and lesbian couples be treated differently under state law. The July 30 community meeting is co-sponsored by: Sacramento Stonewall Democratic Club, Sacramento County Democratic Party, California Capital Political Action Committee (CAPPAC), Sacramento Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), Equality California (EQCA), Town and Country Democrats, and Rainbow Chamber of Commerce

Equality for All / No on Prop 8 Community Meeting, Wed., July 30, 6pm, Curtis Hall in the Sierra 2 Center, 2791 24th St.

Lambda Players: Sappho In Love Opens 7/11

Sappho In Love Opens At Lambda Players Theatre 7/11

Lambda Players new Show Opens: Directed by: Courtney Parks, Stage Manager: Slava Bekker, Cast: Rosita Buada, Kristara Cirrone, Cynthia Drumbor, Bethany Hidden, Ann Marie Patterson, Sandy Richards, Susan Soesbe, Carolyn Stave, Kira Volar, Sandra Whitney. SAPPHO IN LOVE is a riotous romp across the slippery terrain of Lesbian romance, as the goddesses on Olympus come down to earth to recruit among Sappho and her followers. Artemis, the Goddess of Lesbian Celibacy, and Hera, the Goddess of Coupledom, join forces to challenge Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, for her hegemony on Lesbos. Sappho, the great poet and teacher on the island, is a devotee of Aphrodite, and because of this, her school has become a center for the cult of lesbian sexuality and romantic love. Artemis, denouncing Aphrodite’s use of her intoxicating nectar to attract followers, vows to found a rival school on Lesbos where young girls will be weaned away from Sappho’s decadent teachings to learn the more sober arts of wilderness survival. But Artemis underestimates the power of lesbian seduction, when Aphrodite sends Persuasion, her handmaiden, to enroll in outdoor school – and when the Goddess of Celibacy finds herself entangled with the Slave of Desire, she discovers that freedom without intimacy can be as meaningless as intimacy without freedom. 8 PM every Friday and Saturday from July 11 – August 9. lambdaplayers.com
